The name STEUR pays tribute to architect Adriaan van der Steur (1893 – 1953). Van der Steur designed iconic buildings such as Museum Booijmans van Beuningen, the Eye Hospital, the Erasmiaans Gymnasium, De Machinist and the entrance buildings of the Maastunnel. In 1932, he also designed the STEUR building, which at the time still functioned as a power station. A place where energy for the city was generated, a character it has retained ever since.

STEUR is always changing. Every visit you will discover something new – our building is designed to galvanise you, continuously empowering you to reach for new heights.

We provide you with the space to host your off the wall corporate events, or a working station customised to your needs. Our event areas and long-term rental spaces breathe the mechanical atmosphere of the 1930’s, but are constantly enhanced with advanced infrastructural frameworks, sustainable materials and pioneering mentalities.

-Transformation

After a period of vacancy, the building was transformed a few years ago into a place where creativity, technology and entrepreneurship come together. In 2025, the Rotterdam Port Authority took over the building. This marks the beginning of a new phase: STEUR is further developing as a hub for companies working on the future of the port. A home base for a new generation of entrepreneurs, businesses that build, test and scale in the fields of energy and resource transition, maritime, innovation and applied technology.

-Sustainable

The industrial character of STEUR is reflected troughout the entire building, from the turbine hall to the former air-raid shelters. These spaces are now used as workspaces, studios and testing environments. Outside, the imposing blast furnace serves as a reminder of the sites past, while inside work is underway on solutions for the future.

-Energy label A++

Throuh targeted investments in sustainability, STEUR has achieved an A++ energy label. These include solar panels, a heat pump, an electric boiler and improved insulation. In this way, STEUR combines the character of a historic industrial building with the performance of a modern, energy-efficient working environment.
